What kinds of cases do you handle?
VLP handles certain civil matters, including adoption, change of custody, uncontested divorce, child support modification, credit access and debt collection, landlord tenant problems, advice before being sued, and many more. For a more complete list, see the Services section under Get Help.
Do you handle criminal cases?
No. VLP guidelines prohibit us from accepting criminal cases or civil cases for people who are incarcerated.
Is there an income requirement for clients?
Yes. VLP assists low-income clients. If you think you might qualify, please call the VLP office or submit an application.
How do I apply for help?
You can call the VLP intake line at 438-1102, fill out an application at the VLP office or apply online. You do not have to apply in person, but you are welcome to stop by the office for an application.
What are your office hours?
We are open 8:30-5:00 Monday through Friday.
Where are you located?
VLP’s address is 56 St. Joseph St., Suite 312. We are located in the Region's building in downtown Mobile near Bienville Square.
Where do I park?
Our building does not have public parking. There are metered and free 2-hour spots around Bienville Square. A paid parking lot is available on Royal Street next to the Battle House Hotel. VLP does not validate parking.
I called and left a message yesterday. How long will it take for you to call me back?
VLP returns calls in the order in which they are received. It may take a few days to call you back, so please be patient. Calling and leaving multiple messages means we have more messages to check and less time to call people back.
Can I call the office and ask an attorney a quick question?
No. VLP does not have attorneys on staff. You must apply for VLP services. If you have a problem that falls within our guidelines and you meet the income requirements, VLP will assign you an attorney.
How much will I have to pay?
VLP attorneys donate their time to assist VLP clients, so you won’t have to pay the attorney anything. You are responsible for any out-of-pocket costs (court filing fees, publication notices, etc.). Your attorney can tell you what kinds of costs to expect for your case.
Why can’t I pick my appointment time?
VLP does not have attorneys on staff. Attorneys volunteer to see clients at VLP on certain days of the week. We only schedule appointments with an attorney during these times.
Where will I meet my attorney?
Some attorneys see clients at VLP’s office. Other attorneys will schedule appointments at their law firms. Make sure you ask where you are supposed to go.
I want to find out the status of my case. Can you give me that information?
You need to contact your attorney for an update on your case.
Is there a limit to the number of cases I can have with VLP?
We do not limit the number of cases a client can open with VLP, but all cases must be reviewed, approved and assigned by VLP.
