Community Economic Development Initiative
Through the Community Economic Development Initiative, the Mobile Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Program (MBA VLP) assists community based organizations that improve the lives of the VLP client base and contribute to the revitalization of Mobile County. MBA VLP attorneys provide assistance with the legal formation and establishment of non-profit organizations for the benefit of low-income citizens, representation of micro-enterprise organizations to help entrepreneurs in impoverished areas develop their own businesses, and review of contracts and commercial leases for non-profit entities. To obtain assistance the entity must be composed primarily of people eligible for assistance from MBA VLP or must have as a principal activity the delivery of services to those people in the community who would be financially eligible for the Volunteer Lawyers Program.
Wills for Heroes
Everyday, firefighters, police and emergency medical personnel devote their lives to serving their communities, and they are prepared to pay the ultimate price in the line of duty. The Wills for Heroes project of the Alabama State Bar was created to provide the legal community with a way to show its appreciation for the efforts and sacrifices of these brave men and women. Wills for Heroes offers first responders free basic estate planning services. This service is intended to give them the peace of mind by knowing that their affairs are “in order” should the unthinkable occur. The Mobile Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Program manages the Mobile County project. MBA VLP panel attorneys provide assistance at twice yearly clinics. Please contact the Mobile Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Program to inquire about Wills for Heroes.
Web Based Intake System
MBA VLP offers an online intake interview to help potential clients apply for services. The online interview is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week using any computer with internet access. Those in need of services can visit www.vlpmobile.org and click the “Apply online” computer icon. An electronic image of a person guides the applicant through the interview. “Learn More” boxes provide answers to frequently asked questions. Applicants also receive referral information to other service providers when appropriate. The online intake is designed to increase access to the Volunteer Lawyers Program, particularly for those who have difficulty taking time for a telephone interview during VLP’s 8:30 AM- 5:00 PM business hours or who have hearing, speech or language concerns. This project was funded by The Alabama Civil Justice Foundation.
